Image -Are You Invisible?
Not to be noticed is one of the easiest things to do in life. You don’t have to learn magic like David Blaine or David Copperfield to disappear or be invisible. In order for people to treat you like you are invisible, unimportant, non-existent, just wear something that’s not up to the level of attire of the crowd, and they'll act as if you're not there.
Let’s take a look at what makes people invisible or unimportant. Do you want to be any of them?
1. Dressing not according to your position
If you’re one of the executives or managers, but dressing like you’re an office boy, you will likely be noticed, but for the wrong reasons. The board of directors may think twice about how seriously you are taking your position, and will keep this in mind when deciding potential salary raises or career advancement. You, however, will be noticed, regardless of what you wear, if you’re as brilliant as Bill Gates; however, the chances are very unlikely.
2. Dressing too differently from the crowd
My friend once told me of her wedding where the color theme was black and white. Someone decided to be original and came wearing a green jacket and with matching boots. Though the person is known to be trendy in her dress and works in the fashion industry, the setting just wasn’t right for her to show her originality. Sticking to the dress code is part of etiquette and respect for others. True enough, she had been noticed for her dress but not for being respectful.
3. Dressing not according to your age.
Do you know anyone who finds a grandma of 70's wearing a leopard print or legging plus a tattoo on her hand as something that looks sexy? She would definitely be noticed as daring and possibly `cute,’ but it will not necessarily be appropriate. .
4. Dressing not according to your profession
If you’re a lawyer, where conservative clothing represents the profession, but you show up to a trial wearing a colorful and flowery tops or jacket, people who deal with you may question your capabilities and whether they made the right choice.
5. Dressing not according to the location
I was once passing by a luxury boutique in Paris. People have to queue while waiting for their turn to enter. A group of tourists caught my eye when they were stopped from entering the boutique just because they were not properly dressed ( you know sometime we tend to wear our most comfortable clothes when we travel i.e. jeans, khakis, chinos etc) but unfortunately we have to dress according to the destination or place that we wish to go.
I am very sure the group of tourist will bring thousand of revenues to the boutique that day, but here money isn’t the case. ..and truly..money can’t really buy everything.
Do you ever come across your staff dressing unprofessionally, wearing jeans to an elegant dinner, wearing sandals when meeting up with important clients, or other fashion faux pas? If yes, send them to us, and we will make sure they are dressed for success, both theirs and yours.
